Johanna Seibt, Professor of Philosophy, explains the importance of Dignum’s work:

“Artificial intelligence, whether used as unembodied software or embodied in social robots, is a powerful tool that we need to control very carefully.  This is the message that leading researchers have brought into public discussion during the past five years. However, grant agencies, legislation, and, in particular, governmental policy on new education have been slow to respond.  As new AI applications come onto the market almost daily, we still struggle with the question of we can create the concrete interdisciplinary expertise that is necessary in order to develop AI responsibly? Which concrete measures do we need to translate our concerns into the right forms of action?

In order to make progress on these questions, the Research Programme Human Futuresand theResearch Unit for Robophilosophyat Aarhus University have invited one of Europe’s outstanding protagonists for Responsible AI--Virginia Dignum.  Virginia Dignum is professor of computer science, currently heading a special center for “Social and Ethical AI” at Umeå University; she has been very actively involved in international initiatives on policy and strategy guidelines for responsible AI research and applications.  Unlike other scientist-activists in this area, however, her research is focused on delivering concrete proposals for how to move from “high-level ethical principles” to concrete new practices.

Join us on February 25 and 26, for an interdisciplinary workshop with Virginia Dignum, where we discuss principles and proposals for the concrete implementation of responsible AI and how we can cross technology and Humanities expertise to create futures worth living”.
