Human Futures

Human Futures invites everyone to come and join our series of BROWN BAG SEMINARS. On June 08, Jens Christian Krarup Bjerring, Associate Professor at School of Culture and Society - Philosophy at Aarhus University, will visit us and speak about the project Algorithmic Decision Making: Philosophical Challenges for which he in 2020 received a Carlsberg Foundation Young Researcher Fellowship of 3.792.510 DKK.

About the project

The project asks, generally, how the widespread inclusion of machine-learning algorithms in society will affect decision making. On the one hand, there is reason to expect that such algorithms in many data heavy contexts soon will be more reliable and accurate than even human experts. Yet, on the other hand, such algorithms often work as intransparent "black-boxes": they correlate reliably and accurately specific inputs with specific outputs, but we have no idea why and how they do it. Thus we face a trade-off: by aligning our decision making with algorithms, we increase accuracy and reliability, but in virtue of their intransparency, we risk sacrificing informed decision making in the process. On June 08, Bjerring will talk about the background of the project as well as how the project investigates the theoretical and practical implications of this trade-off.

Participation in the seminar is free and does not require registration. We hope to see you on Zoom (link to zoom meeting is here) on June 08 from 12.00 - 13.15.
