Time: 15.15-17.30

Location: Jeppe Vontillius (1252-310)

Having published over 30 books on philosophy, technology, digitization, capitalism, and consumer culture, Bernard Stiegler is recognized as one of the world’s leading thinkers of technology’s influence on society. Through rigorous investigations of emerging forms of industrialization and automation, the philosopher has had a wide influence in many fields concerned with the human future, from economics to engineering, from politics to art.

Considering that technics are essentially and irreducibly pharmaka—that all tools are both poisons and remedies—he has insisted that we deal with technologies pharmacologically, and that we trace how technical entities evolve and interact organologically. Crucially, he stresses how these considerations intersect the issues of the Anthropocene, where it has become urgent to renegotiate boundaries between human, non-human and inhuman.

On February 7, the beautiful surroundings at the lake auditorium will act as the setting for Stigler's public lecture on "The Wealth of Internation". Everyone is welcome.

Graduate seminar: "Simondon and his notion of information"

Time: 10.15-13.00

Location: William Scharff (1253-317)

The French philosopher Bernard Stiegler, one of the world’s leading thinkers of technology’s effects on contemporary culture, is offering a masterclass at Aarhus University. Bernard Stiegler will introduce and contextualize the concept of information in the work of Gilbert Simondon, as well as develop its significance for thinking of technology, life, and the human future. The masterclass will involve a lecture, close readings of pre-assigned texts, and group discussion.

Additionally, a limited group of graduate researchers will have the chance to give a short presentation of their research and get individualized feedback from the philosopher. Students will receive an intro to Stiegler’s use of the concept of information and to why it is important for thinking the human future. Readings will be assigned in advance of the masterclass, which will have to be read beforehand, enabling more profound discussions.

A select group of students will present their research and receive individualized feedback on their projects.

Topics: Information, transindividuation, technology, the human future.

The masterclass is open to all graduate researchers, but priority will be given to doctoral researchers. While all will participate in the discussion, due to time constraints, only a limited number of participants will be selected to present their research during the masterclass. We will prioritize those for whom Stiegler’s work is of specific relevance for their research.

If you wish to be included in this group, please send in a 350-500 word abstract along with your registration, making explicit mention of how Stiegler’s writings intersect your research.

For more information on the graduate seminar, please visit phdcourses.dk

To sign up and submit your abstract, please write tfh@cc.au.dk preferably before 1st of February.

The two events are part of the Chronopolitics and Aesthetics of Futurity research project, and made possible by Human Futures, Posthuman Aesthetics and the School of Communication and Culture.
